Study on Citrulline

Interesting study on citrulline NOT for vasodilation and NO production, but for body comp changes. 20 month-old rats were given 1g/kg(HED= 160mg/kg)of citrulline or 1g/kg of a non-essential amino acid mixture for 12 weeks. At the end of the 12 weeks, both groups had the same average bodyweight, but the citrulline group had 13% less body fat and 9% more lean body mass vs the other group. Visceral fat mass was also reduced by 32%.

 

The researchers hypothesized that citrulline's effects are from its ability to increase muscle gene expression, including mitochondrial transcription factor A and other genes that affect the aging process. There was also evidence showing citrulline protects from lipid peroxidation(cell damage due to free radicals). The rats taking citrulline had a 0% mortality rate vs 20% in the other group. The citrulline group also had increases in muscle fiber diameters and increases in tropomyosin. The decrease in body fat may be from increased mitochondrial(where your cells make energy and burn fat) enzymatic activity.

 

Takeaway: it is in rats, but it's promising and there are tons of health benefits(cardioprotective, blood flow, antiaging) from supplementing with citrulline daily. I think that if it is increased gene expression and mitochondrial activity, the results should crossover to humans. So, for health benefits and body comp changes, 160mg/kg of citrulline may help out.
